Azathioprine

Azathioprine belongs to a group of drugs called immunosuppressants, which control the actions of the body’s immune system. Sometimes our immune system reacts excessively to abnormal cells and diseases or it attacks healthy tissue instead. This leads to various autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, multiple sclerosis, atopic dermatitis and restrictive lung disease. Azathioprine helps suppress these unwanted reactions from the immune system and effectively combats or slows down the related condition. In addition, Azathioprine prevents the body from rejecting transplanted organs.

FAQs

How does Azathioprine work?

Azathioprine belongs to a group of drugs called immunosuppressants, which control the actions of the body’s immune system. Under normal circumstances, our immune system helps us fight diseases by recognizing and attacking pathogens and abnormal cells. However, sometimes the immune system reacts excessively to these threats or attacks healthy tissue instead. This leads to various autoimmune diseases. Azathioprine helps suppress these unwanted reactions from the immune system by interfering with the production of the DNA of white blood cells. This stops the cells from dividing and multiplying and eventually decreases their number. Because the immune system relies on these white blood cells, its actions are thus effectively reduced.
